Isomorphs

Isomorphs is a projection mapping sculpture series, shown alongside GMUNK’s Miscellany prints at the Laguna College of Art and Design in 2018.

LCAD Miscellany Exhibition | Isomorphs

I joined forces with the Geo-master-blaster, GMUNK, to create two projection pieces for the Miscellany Exhibition, hosted by the Laguna College of Art and Design. We worked with the light wizard, Phil Reyneri, to align our animations to a framed acrylic print and a vinyl window graphic. Our fabrication and gallery coordination was handled by the talented Mixtus Design. The two projection works were titled ‘Isomorphs’ and were shown alongside GMUNK’s series of Infrared photography, Subdivision Series and Mathographics Series.

The word isomorphic derives from the Greek iso, meaning "equal," and morphosis, meaning "to form" or "to shape."  In mathematics, the term defines elements that have corresponding forms.  Both of the projection pieces displayed are derived from the same cubic structure.  The window formation relies completely on flat isometric perspective while the acrylic print uses an incredibly wide fish-eye perspective.

The two pieces were designed in Cinema 4D, both based off a cube. The wall installation is a reflective cube with an ultra-wide panoramic camera placed inside. I created several different light passes by moving particles and illuminated panels through the cube. The window installation was created by the same cube structure, but copied several times and rendered from isometric perspective. I then used Adobe After effects to create several different combinations of light passes from Cinema 4D. GMUNK and I went through several different variations of each design before handing them over to Dan Jensen for fabrication. Dan had the window installation cut from white vinyl and applied it to the glass. The framed wall installation involved multiple layers of acrylic, each with white vinyl prints placed between them.
